IT is mindsetting not physical


building house IT is not physical you are not able to: feel, smell, make fotographs, or take a walk around it. The normal human environment is missing.

To get it more human we could compare the IT with the construction of buildings. Mostly the same words are used, architecture design build accept.
Let us do the comparison of virtual IT-world (clicks) with the real world handling with bricks

Starting which this comparison, there are attitude differences. I will exaggerate it.

house lived in office in use The builders working on the new house don´t live there. They sleep eat and have family in a fully operational house (production) that is ready.
The office of the builders, contractor, is ready and housing a lot of staff like architects. The contractors business (there is a business owner) is doing the builders job thereby making profits (production)

In the IT all things are bits&bytes. Sometimes it is claimed all phases (develop/test/acceptance/production) should be equal to one person.
Getting this to bricks: The builders should live in house that is not ready. The contractors office should only exist in blue-prints.
These contradictions are not causing some pain as people are still finding workarounds.

Utilities are planned in advance are utilities needed?
Synchronization of information?
During building temporarily provisions for utilities are made to be designed?

Used machinery as production tools to be designed?
The utilities are expected for the building. These features have become commodity. They are planned in advance with the site preparation:

machinery emergency replacement Machinery has come on the building site. Fully operational and delivering hard work for -production-. No one is expecting machinery in phase development. Machinery that is not working yet.
There are companies offering support in case of outage (failing to deliver production)of machineries. A car with a replacement is standing by.

In the IT all things are bits&bytes. Sometimes it is claimed all phases (develop/test/acceptance/production) should be equal to one person.
The developer has to work with development tools (machinery). with that claim it is actually saying: the developer should use tools not ready to be used. This contradiction is not causing some pain as people are still finding workarounds.

The people working at the site are needing utilities. These are provided on temporarily implementations using as much as possible the commodity services.

During the construction of the building still a lot has to be organized. Not every detail is known in advance.

The world of bricks is also changing. BIM and LEED are new buzzing words. Meaning construction and design are getting more coralated.

The acceptance of the construction normally results in a party. The success of it is announced in public.

The interior , furniture is one of te last things to do. It is the image of the working area.

This is an interesting segregation that can becompared to IT where hardware (building utilities as infrastructure) is becoming commodity. The real question will be supporting the business. Also this level can become commodity. The -AAS buzzwords trying to get to bricks.
IAAS Infrastructure As A Service - More or less common in bricks world. Utilities are rarely implemented local anymore, or it should be in the outer areas.
PAAS Platform As A Service - That is the delivering of a building, owned leased ar rented are variations on the theme
DAAS Desktop As A Service - All internal furniture and other not your "core business" is delivered. Facility Management is already done with bricks.
SAAS Software As A Service - All procedures/processes are delivered in more common business known as "Franchise", just daily operations is your responsibility
Question: If you let doing all the -AAS working for you, what is left to your "core business"?

The security of all like a guarded entrance is one of te last things to do. It is a requirement I almost forgot to make a figure in comparing all these steps to building.

Failures

Building has been practiced for many years, thousands of years. Still failures are made. They can be more or less not harming (Pisa Tacoma) or frightens as the ground to build on is disappearing.
They are exceptions in this world, getting much attention.

IT architecture exists just a couple of years. The failures are more common in the rapid evolvement within IT
There is a lot to do to get it to the same level as working with bricks.




Planning & project

Budget failures are not a technical failure.
They are caused by other factors.
Status and project management, eg: Cost overrun is common in infrastructure, building, and technology projects.
Underestimating the craft of Nature, still requiring and needing the protection to humans, combined with the status and project challenges: Katrina Political effects.
Delta works The budgets are kept out of this history, they were changed continously.

What could possibly go wrong with this kind of approach?
The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE, also sometimes shortened to CoE)is a federal agency and a major Army command made up of some 38,000 civilian and military personnel, making it the world's largest public engineering, design and construction management agency.

As innovation can get blocked. Better and cheaper approaches are eliminated.
In the end the whole budget of a plan can be spent and gone just to management overhead.
